[ Resource Center ] As a partner in the fight against malaria, Sumitomo Chemical applauds the growing momentum in the fight against malaria, and heeds the call to help achieve the bold targets called for by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon -- to provide malaria interventions to all people at risk, especially women and children in Africa, by 2010. In this section, you will find links to key partners, projects, news and information.

Sumitomo Chemical believes that to meet the MDG malaria targets, bednet production must be localized in Africa -- and is leading the way by manufacturing Olyset Net in a 50/50 joint venture with A to Z Textile Mills in Tanzania. Initiated with a royalty-free technology transfer in 2003 -- today the partnership has created more than 6,000 jobs in Arusha, supporting at least 30,000 people. In 2010, the total Arusha-based production capacity accounts for 29 million nets per annum — about 50% of total Olyset Net global production.

The Olyset model produces a vital public health product and simultaneously boosts economic development in Africa, Sumitomo Chemical believes this is an advance beyond aid, toward self-sustaining enterprise in the service of public health. As stated by Sumitomo Chemical Chairman Hiromasa Yonekura, "This Tanzania operation is a stronghold for our Olyset Net business. From here, we will further expand our Olyset Net operations in Africa, and we will enhance our efforts in the fight against malaria and to contribute to Africa's economic development."
